Frequently Asked Questions
Travel Photo Awards submission categories (Hereafter ‘Awards’), encompassing both the monthly themed single-photo or series photo competitions, is open to both amateur and professional photographers (hereafter ‘Entrants’) aged 18 years and over (or of the age of majority in jurisdictions in their respective country), and from all over the world. Entrants must not be an employee, officer or agent of Travel Photo Awards, nor an employee, officer or agent of any person or organization involved in the running or judging of the Award, nor a family relation of any such person.
The applicable costs for entering the Award are set out on the website, and the prizes shall be as specified on the website.
There is no maximum number of entries to the Award per person.
The monthly themed competitions and shall close for entries at the time and on the date specified on the website.
Usage and rights
Your copyright and moral rights
Travel Photo Awards respects the rights of Entrants and does not claim copyright for the photographs submitted to the Award. Entrants retain full copyright in submitted photographs.
In addition, the moral rights of Entrants are respected. Whenever their work is published by Travel Photo Awards (and partners) they will be credited. Failure to publish a credit due to error or oversight shall not be deemed a breach of this condition. Travel Photo Awards will seek to correct any errors or oversights when notified.
By entering the Award, Entrants warrant to Travel Photo Awards that you created your competition entries, that you are the author of your work, you own all of the copyright in those entries, that it does not include trademarks, contract rights, or any other intellectual property rights of any other third person or entity and that the use by Travel Photo Awards of the entries in accordance with these terms and conditions will not infringe any person’s intellectual property rights or other legal rights. You must not submit to the award any material that is or has ever been the subject of any threatened or actual legal proceedings or other similar complaint.
You will be responsible for any claim made by any third party in respect of your entry and to fully indemnify Travel Photo Awards and its sponsors in respect of all royalties, fees and any other monies owing to any person or entity by reason of your breaching any of the foregoing. Travel Photo Awards reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to disqualify any entry that does not comply with any of the above, even after the entry is submitted on the competition website.
Use of works
By entering the Award, Entrant agrees that any work you submit may be used by Travel Photo Awards (and partners) solely for purposes in connection with the Award or future Awards, and any successor website and no other purpose. These uses include:
- Judging the competition
- Displaying entries on the Travel Photo Awards website and social media outlets, and those of its partners
- Displaying the entries at any gallery exhibitions
- Displaying the entries in a book, magazine or exhibition catalogue related to Travel Photo Awards, or similar
- Using the entries on posters, adverts or postcards to promote the award
- Cropping and re-sizing the work as necessary to fit pre-defined formats to promote the award and any related exhibitions
- Sub-licensing the entries to the press for reproduction in connection with the contest (the Entrant will be notified of such reproductions prior to publication, and have the right to refuse)
- Inclusion within any materials promoting the Award or any exhibition organized by Travel Photo Awards
You hereby grant Travel Photo Awards a non-exclusive, royalty-free license in each entry throughout the world in all media for the uses described above for three years following the date of announcement of the winners.
You acknowledge your responsibility for protecting your entry against misuse by third parties, through means such as the embedding of metadata. Travel Photo Awards (and its partners) can assume no responsibility and is not liable for any misuse of your work by third parties.
Any reproduction of entries outside of the uses listed above will occur only after receiving the Entrant’s express permission. The Entrant will be contacted and given the opportunity to negotiate any such usage with the parties concerned independently of the Award.
Travel Photo Awards uses the social media platforms Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. While Travel Photo Awards guarantees that photographers will be fully credited when posting images on social media and through any of the other channels listed above, Travel Photo Awards cannot guarantee that others who copy or repost images will do the same.
Upon each Award closing date, Travel Photo Awards’s editors will screen entries and decide among editorial staff, or submit selected entries to the judge for his or her review (if a judge is determining winners for the Award). Editorial staff or judge will then select the shortlist and Prize entries based on the photographic skill, artistic sensibilities, emotion, impact and originality. The decisions of the staff or judge are final.
Images submitted will be treated anonymously throughout the entire process to ensure total fairness. The editorial staff or judge will have sole discretion of his or her selection and attempting to contact any judge directly in order to influence them will result in disqualification of the Entrant.
Travel Photo Awards aims to announce the shortlist and winners for each contest within sixty days of the submission close date. The winners and shortlisted photographers will be notified by email and published on the Travel Photo Awards website and associated social media. Winners are accountable for any fees associated with the award acceptance, such as any applicable federal, state, provincial and local taxes.
If a competition Entrant does not meet the eligibility requirements or is subject to any entry restrictions, that Entrant shall not be entitled to be adjudged a winner, and will not be entitled to a prize in any circumstances.
Entrant’s images should be sized under 2mb and in .jpg or .png format.
Images should be named with your full name and the theme you wish to enter. For example:
If images have individual titles, these can be included in the description / statement box during the upload process.
Right to cancel
Travel Photo Awards reserves the right to cancel or suspend the Award at its own discretion if not capable of continuing as planned for any reason that is beyond its control. If the Award is cancelled in a particular month, Travel Photo Awards will refund the entry fees for all Entrants of that month and will not reserve the right to use any of the submitted photographs.
Travel Photo Awards does not provide refunds for photography withdrawn before or after the close of an Award. Travel Photo Awards does provide refunds for software errors and duplicate submissions. Uploading the wrong photo does not warrant a refund, but Entrant will have the opportunity to edit their submission with the correct photo.
Modification of competition rules
Travel Photo Awards reserves the right to change the competition rules. Entrants whom the changes affect will be notified by email.
Travel Photo Awards will take no responsibility for the repercussions of any photograph submitted to the Award, nor any liabilities incurred by the Entrants while participating in the Award.
Do I retain full usage and copyright of the photos I submit?
Yes. Travel Photo Awards respects your rights and does not claim copyright for works you submit to the award. You will retain full copyright in each entry, with us granted a license to use it for specific purposes (e.g. on our social media feeds and in relation to posting on our website).
How should I format, size, and name my images?
We accept photos of any type — film and digital, landscape, portrait, square, etc. Please make sure that each one is in .jpg or .png file format, and less than 2mb in size — we recommend around 1000px shortest dimension. If you are chosen to display the image in a larger format (marketing material, gallery, etc.) we may contact you for the photo in a larger size at that time.
You will be given the opportunity to name your image when you submit by giving it a Title. Don’t worry, any Title is fine.
May I include a description of the photo alongside the Title?
Yes, when you submit your images, there is a text box where you may add a description.
May I submit an old image?
Yes you may. Any age photo is valid so long as it adheres to all copyright laws.
May I submit mobile / cell phone or social (Instagram) images?
The best camera is the one that’s always with you. Photography is clearly evolving and we pivot with the times too. So yes you can submit pictures taken with a mobile/cell phone and Instagram ones too. It’s not all about the filter though, so keep your shots sharp and meaningful!
Please note that due to resolution constraints of some phones, mobile/cell phone images may have sizing restraints if we ask later for a larger image size.
May I submit a photo montage?
As long as photography is the principle medium, we would love to see it. We also accept mixed-media images. So long as the subject matter adheres to the contest, we’re happy to consider your work.
If I’m photographing people, will I need a model release?
Most likely not. However, there are a number of questions to consider when deciding whether a model release is necessary, including the specific circumstances the image was captured, and what country it was taken in. Is image post-processing allowed?
Unless expressly detailed in the contest and award description page, Yes of course — it’s your art and the effects you choose to apply in-camera and afterwards are your decision. Please don’t add any watermarks to your images though.

Are the awards open to anyone?
Travel Photo Awards is open to all photographers around the world, except where prohibited by law. Photographers must be 18 years of age or older at the time of submission.
What is Submittable?
Submittable is the software we use to accept your photo submission. Submittable is a free software and you will need to sign up for a Submittable account before you enter our contest or award. You may sign up for a free account at www.submittable.com
How do I submit?
After you’ve created (or already have) your Submittable account, please select the Category you’d like to enter on our Submit page. You will be directed to the fields for that particular entry, entering your photo title and uploading your photo. If multiple photos are allowed, you will be able to upload them here. If payment is required, you will be prompted for payment here.
My image won’t upload…
Firstly, please check that each one is .jpg or .png format, and less than 2mb in size. Please also ensure that you are attaching one photo per upload box. If the problem persists, please send an email to email@example.com
How many times may I enter?
You can enter as many times as you like.
How many images may I submit?
Please pay close attention to the category and photo limitation per entry. Some submission categories allow for only a single image, and some for a series of photographs. You may submit the maximum number of photos as the category allows. Again (see above question), you may enter multiple entries and submit the maximum number of photos per entry.
Can I see or change the photos I’ve submitted?
You can see all of your past in your Submittable account and they will remain there until deleted by you. You may contact Travel Photo Awards to change a photo ONLY if the upload was in error. You may not swap your entry with another photo altogether.
Is there an entry fee to submit?
We have both free and paid submission categories, so please choose which type of contest or award you would like to enter.
If there is a fee, may I pay via cash or check?
No. Unfortunately, we can only accept payments via credit card or PayPal at this time, and this is done via Submittable at the time when you submit your photo.
May I enter the same photo / series in multiple categories?
Yes. If the series fits thematically in more than one category, you may submit it for consideration in additional categories.
What type of correspondence should I expect from Travel Photo Awards during the contest?
We aim to be very transparent, clear, and communicative with our entrants. Thus, you can expect to hear from us via email several times during the contest, namely, upon entry, when your submission is being reviewed, and the final decisions on the contest or award.
If I win, will I incur any costs if the photo is placed anywhere?
No, Travel Photo Awards covers exhibition or advertising costs including gallery hire, image printing and framing, and promotion if this is part of the award. We cannot cover your travel expenses for visiting the exhibitions if they are displayed in a physical location. You will be responsible for any federal, state, or local taxes of your prize money.
My image has been selected for a final round, what should I do?
Nice work! We’ll be emailing you with full instructions when it happens and will talk you through the whole process. We may need a high-resolution version of your image along with a few other details. We’ll then keep you updated with anything else we need. Overall, you don’t have to do much except bask in your glory!
My photo won an award in another competition, may I still submit it?
Yes. There is no restriction to submitting work that has been part of other photo competitions, unless expressly restricted by the prior competition.
Will my image be sold?
No. You retain copyright to your photograph and your photos will not be sold or used for commercial purposes. All entries may be posted online so that viewers may view and vote on all competing entries. Winning entries may be used in exhibitions, marketing, advertising and promotions directly related to Travel Photo Awards.
